It can be reduced to metallic cobalt by carbon powder, hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Cobalt oxide can be obtained by oxidizing metal cobalt powder in oxygen or air, or heating and decomposing cobalt nitrate, cobalt carbonate or cobalt hydroxide in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere.
